Greece draws Americans for destination weddings, residence through the golden visa or financially independent person permit, and property. All of them ask for apostilled U.S. documents.

Translations into Greek are made by the Translation Service of Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or certified by a Greek lawyer, so plan that step in Greece rather than in the U.S.

Translation

Greek translation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs translation service, or certified by a Greek lawyer. Translate after the apostille, so it is translated too. See translation requirements.

Things worth knowing

  • Weddings need notice: intent to marry is published at least eight days ahead.
  • A tax number (AFM) is needed for most property and residence steps.
  • State or federal? A document issued by a state or county, or notarized, is apostilled by that state. One issued by a federal agency, such as an FBI check, by the U.S. Department of State.

Apostille for Greece: common questions

Does Greece accept apostilles?

Yes. Greece has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 18 May 1985, so a U.S. apostille is all the certification it needs. No embassy step is involved.

Do I need a translation for Greece?

Greek translation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs translation service, or certified by a Greek lawyer.

Who apostilles my document?

The state that issued it, or where it was notarized. Federal documents such as an FBI check go to the U.S. Department of State. See apostille by state.
