Texas documents are apostilled by the Texas Secretary of State in Austin. If your birth certificate, marriage licence, court record, or notarized document originated in Texas, that is the only authority that can certify it, no matter where you live now.

Texas is one of the more straightforward states to work with. There is no separate county authentication step of the kind New York requires, so a correctly certified document generally goes straight to the state.

The complication in Texas is usually the document itself rather than the process. Texas vital records are issued both by the Texas Department of State Health Services and by individual county clerks, and the two look different. Both can be apostilled provided the copy is properly certified, but an uncertified county print-out cannot.

We do not have a walk-in office in Texas, so Texas orders are handled mail-in. In practice that costs you a day or two of shipping, not a worse outcome. We can also retrieve a fresh certified copy on your behalf if what you have will not be accepted.

Texas-specific things worth knowing

  • County or state copy, both work, provided the copy is properly certified with a seal. An unsealed print-out will not be accepted.
  • The notary must be Texas-commissioned for a Texas apostille on a private document.
  • No separate authentication step before the Secretary of State, unlike some states.
  • Texas now issues a single universal Apostille certificate that serves as both apostille and authentication. Documents bound for non-Convention countries still need the further step at the U.S. Department of State afterwards.
  • Texas vital records carry a $150 per document surcharge over our vital record price, reflecting what the state charges and the extra handling its process requires. It is shown in your total before you pay, never added afterwards.
  • Large counties differ. Harris, Dallas, Bexar, Tarrant and Travis each issue records slightly differently, which matters if we are retrieving one for you.
  • Court documents need the clerk’s certification and seal before the state will act on them.

Texas Apostille: common questions

Can I just mail my document or turn up without booking?

No. Please book first. The mailing instructions at the end of the booking give you the address to use and the order number to send with your documents. An unannounced envelope or visit has no order attached to it, which is how documents get delayed.

Do I need to be in Texas?

No. Mail the document to us from anywhere, or have us retrieve a certified copy. The document goes to Texas, you do not.

County clerk copy or state copy: which do I need?

Either is normally fine as long as it is a certified copy with the official seal. If you are unsure which you have, send a photo through the free review and we will confirm.

Can you get a Texas birth certificate for me?

Yes, document retrieval is one of our services. It adds time, since it depends on the issuing office, but it saves you dealing with the county yourself.

My document was notarized in Texas but I live elsewhere. Where does it go?

Texas, because that is where the notary is commissioned. Where you live has no bearing on which state issues the apostille.

Why does Texas cost more than other states?

Texas birth, marriage and death certificates and other state-issued records carry a $150 per document surcharge, so they start at $309. Other documents start at $119. That reflects the state’s own fees and the additional handling its process requires. You see it itemised in your total before paying, and our booking flow flags it as soon as you select Texas rather than at checkout.

How long does a Texas apostille take?

Typically seven or more business days once we have a correct document, plus shipping in each direction. See processing times for the full picture.
