Kansas documents are apostilled by the Kansas Secretary of State in Topeka. If your document was issued in Kansas, or notarized by a notary commissioned in Kansas, that is the only office that can certify it, wherever you live now.

Kansas apostilles come from the Secretary of State in Topeka. The fee rose to $10 a document on 2 March 2026, from $7.50, so guides quoting the old figure are out of date.

Kansas City straddles two states, and that causes the most common Kansas mistake. A document notarized or issued on the Missouri side goes to Missouri, whatever the address on the envelope says.

We handle Kansas orders by mail from anywhere in the country, and a mobile notary can come to you anywhere in Kansas when a document needs signing first. The state fee is already inside our price, along with the submission and return shipping.

Kansas-specific things worth knowing

  • The fee changed in March 2026. It is now $10, not $7.50.
  • Kansas City, Kansas is not Kansas City, Missouri. Where the notary is commissioned, or which state issued the record, decides the office.
  • The notary must be commissioned in Kansas. A document notarized across a state line goes to that state instead.
  • Federal documents never go to KS Secretary of State. An FBI background check, IRS letter or naturalization certificate is apostilled by the U.S. Department of State. See federal apostille.

Kansas Apostille: common questions

Who issues apostilles in Kansas?

The Kansas Secretary of State, in Topeka. Documents issued in Kansas, or notarized by a Kansas notary, go there.

How much does a Kansas apostille cost?

The state charges $10. Our price starts at $99 per document and already includes that fee, so there is nothing extra to pay the state. See pricing.

Does Kansas need a county certification first?

No. Kansas certifies its notaries and officials directly, so a correct document goes straight to the state.

My document is federal. Can Kansas apostille it?

No. An FBI background check, IRS letter, USCIS document or federal court record carries a federal signature, so it goes to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., whichever state you live in. See federal apostille.

I live outside Kansas. Can I still get a Kansas apostille?

Yes. The state that issued the document decides the office, not where you live. Post it to us from anywhere and we submit it in Topeka.

How long does a Kansas apostille take?

It depends on the state’s current queue plus shipping. See processing times for what we are seeing now, and ask about rush if you have a deadline.
