New Jersey documents are apostilled by the New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services in Trenton. If your document was issued in New Jersey, or notarized by a notary commissioned in New Jersey, that is the only office that can certify it, wherever you live now.
New Jersey apostilles are not issued by the Secretary of State but by the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services, part of the Treasury, in Trenton. The fee is $25 a document, or $5 for an adoption.
Living close to New York causes the usual New Jersey mistake. A document notarized in Manhattan is a New York document, and goes through the New York county clerk and Albany, even if you live and work in New Jersey.
We handle New Jersey orders by mail from anywhere in the country, and a mobile notary can come to you anywhere in New Jersey when a document needs signing first. The state fee is already inside our price, along with the submission and return shipping.

New Jersey-specific things worth knowing
- The Division of Revenue, not the Secretary of State, issues New Jersey apostilles.
- A New York notarization is a New York document, with New York’s county clerk step. See New York apostille.
- Marriage records come from the local registrar of the town where the licence was issued.
- The notary must be commissioned in New Jersey. A document notarized across a state line goes to that state instead.
- Federal documents never go to NJ Division of Revenue. An FBI background check, IRS letter or naturalization certificate is apostilled by the U.S. Department of State. See federal apostille.

New Jersey Apostille: common questions
Who issues apostilles in New Jersey?
The New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services, in Trenton. Documents issued in New Jersey, or notarized by a New Jersey notary, go there.
How much does a New Jersey apostille cost?
The state charges $25 ($5 for adoptions). Our price starts at $99 per document and already includes that fee, so there is nothing extra to pay the state. See pricing.
Does New Jersey need a county certification first?
No. New Jersey certifies its notaries and officials directly, so a correct document goes straight to the state.
My document is federal. Can New Jersey apostille it?
No. An FBI background check, IRS letter, USCIS document or federal court record carries a federal signature, so it goes to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., whichever state you live in. See federal apostille.
I live outside New Jersey. Can I still get a New Jersey apostille?
Yes. The state that issued the document decides the office, not where you live. Post it to us from anywhere and we submit it in Trenton.
How long does a New Jersey apostille take?
It depends on the state’s current queue plus shipping. See processing times for what we are seeing now, and ask about rush if you have a deadline.
